about

These short pieces were written for a concert at Wesleyan University's Memorial Chapel on 22 September 2011. The concert featured pieces for computer-controlled pipe organ. The pipe organ at Wesleyan has a MIDI input and output that allows someone to sequence what the organ plays using a simple MIDI file or by using software like SuperCollider or Max/MSP to generate MIDI information in real-time. These 4 short pieces were sequenced entirely using SuperCollider. Each movement has some kind of open or random element coded into the piece. So each time the piece is run, it is different. The overall structure and length is the same each time, but the exact configuration is different.

The first section uses only the sound of the shutters opening and closing, the second section uses a consistent timbre but gradually builds the sound up using uneven sequences of pitches and rhythms. The third section uses only 3 tones but gradually changes the stops used on the organ to create different beating patterns and timbral effects. The final section uses 3 independent gestures to build to the finale.
